Azerbaijan court delivers verdict against Murad Guliyev over anti-state calls

The final hearing was held in the criminal case of Murad Guliyev, who is accused of making public calls against the state, APA reports.

An in absentia verdict was delivered today at the Baku Court on Grave Crimes, during a hearing chaired by Judge Mahira Karimova.

Under the verdict, Murad Guliyev was sentenced to 6 years in prison.

Note that a decision has been made to prosecute Murad Gudrat oglu Guliyev as a suspect under Article 281.1 of the Criminal Code (for making open calls to forcibly seize power, forcibly detain authorities, forcibly change the constitutional order of the Republic of Azerbaijan, or to break up the country’s territorial integrity, as well as for distributing materials of such content). As he has fled the investigation and is hiding outside the borders of Azerbaijan, a search has been announced against him for the purpose of pressing charges. By the decision of the Binagadi District Court on February 15 this year, a pre-trial detention in absentia has been ordered against him.

On September 12, additions and amendments were made to the charges, and a decision was made to prosecute Murad Guliyev as a suspect under Article 281.2 of the Criminal Code (for making open calls against the state; if the same acts are repeated or committed by a group of persons).

It was noted that on September 23, 2019, on the “Murad Guliyev” page on the Facebook platform, and on December 24, 2023, on the “RaffNaff” channel on the YouTube platform, he — acting together with others as a group in prior collusion — disseminated open calls encouraging the use of force against the legitimately formed and functioning government of Azerbaijan.
