Germany's Bayern Munich defeated Spain's Real Madrid 2-1 in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals. The match took place at the Santoyago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, APA reports.
Luis Diaz (41st minute) and Harry Kane (46) scored for the winners, while Kylian Mbappé (74) scored for the losers.
Bayern beat Real Madrid for the first time since 2012. Back then, the Munich team beat their opponents in the first leg of the semi-final (2-1), but lost the return leg (1-2), advancing to the next round thanks to a 3-1 penalty shootout victory. In total, the German club failed to beat Real Madrid in regulation time for nine matches—eight losses and one draw.
In the parallel match, English club Arsenal defeated Portuguese club Sporting CP 1-0 on the road thanks to a goal from Kai Havertz in second-half stoppage time. The return legs in both matches will take place on April 15 in Munich and London.
The Champions League is Europe's premier club competition. Last season, the competition was won by French club Paris Saint-Germain, whose squad includes Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov. Real Madrid holds the record for most trophies won (15).
