Azerbaijan defines new requirements for foreign media outlets

After branches and representative offices of foreign media entities are registered in the Republic of Azerbaijan, the authority designated by the relevant executive authority must notify the competent executive authority within 3 (three) working days, APA reports.

This was reflected in the proposed amendment to the Law on Media, which was put up for discussion at today's session of the Milli Majlis.

Following their registration, foreign media entities’ branches and representative offices must apply to the relevant authority designated by the executive power within 7 (seven) working days for inclusion in the Media Registry.

In the Republic of Azerbaijan, if branches or representative offices of foreign media entities operate in violation of these requirements or are removed from the Media Register, this shall constitute grounds for their termination by the relevant authority designated by the competent executive authority. In the cases provided for, access to the internet information resources (websites) of such branches or representative offices shall be immediately restricted by the authority designated by the relevant executive authority, based on the request of that authority.

It is also stated that journalists working in the branches and representative offices of foreign media outlets in Azerbaijan, as well as foreign journalists themselves, will not be included in the Media Registry.

After discussions, the bill was put to a vote and passed on third reading.
