Georgia to ban political activity of business entities, fines introduced

Political activity of legal entities engaged in entrepreneurship will be banned in Georgia, APA's local bureau reports.

A draft amendment to the country's Code of Administrative Offenses has been prepared in this regard.

According to the legislative draft initiated by the ruling Georgian Dream party, any activity carried out or to be carried out by a legal entity engaged in business with the aim of influencing the government, state bodies or any part of society, or any activity aimed at the formation, implementation or change of Georgia's domestic or foreign policy, will be considered political activity.

According to the new article "Political activity of a legal entity engaged in entrepreneurial activity" to be added to the Code of Administrative Offenses, openly carrying out political activity will result in a fine of 20,000 lari (approximately 13,000 AZN). In case of repetition of the mentioned action, the fine will amount to 40,000 lari (25,288 AZN).

Georgian Dream stated that the aim of the initiative is to separate business from political processes and limit the influence of entrepreneurs on the public sphere.
