Georgia to ban foreign lobbying

Penalties will be imposed for foreign lobbying activities in Georgia,  Irakli Kirtskhalia, head of the Georgian Dream parliamentary faction, said at a briefing, APA's local bureau reports.

According to him, a package of proposals on amendments to the Law "On Grants" is being prepared in this regard.

Kirtskhalia said that the direct or indirect provision of money, securities, other property, property benefits or any other advantage to a citizen or legal entity of another state in exchange for activities on political issues related to Georgia will result in a fine, 300 to 500 hours of community service or up to 6 years in prison.

He emphasized that the concept of a legal entity of another state, whose activities include activities on issues related to Georgia, will also be defined:

"Such persons will be able to obtain grants only with the consent of the Georgian government, otherwise criminal liability will arise."

The faction leader added that from now on, a grant will be considered any funds given by any person to any person in cash or in kind, which are used or may be used to influence the Georgian government, state institutions, or any part of society.
