The World Bank is reviewing a project in Azerbaijan aimed at reducing gas leaks, APA-Economics reports, citing the World Bank.
According to the information, the project aims to reduce methane emissions by detecting and repairing gas leaks in the gas distribution system operated by “Azeriqaz”, as well as to strengthen institutional capacity in asset management.
The project’s total financing amounts to $15 million and is scheduled for approval on April 23, 2026.
Within the framework of the project, a dedicated financing mechanism will be established for the detection and repair of gas leaks. This mechanism will be launched through an initial grant to be allocated from the GFMR Trust Fund. The funds will be gradually channeled to “Azeriqaz” through SOCAR and will be used to implement priority measures for gas leak detection and repair. The selection of measures will be based on criteria such as cost-effectiveness, technical complexity, and impact on emissions reduction.
At the same time, part of the GFMR funds will be directed toward developing “Azeriqaz” institutional capacities in methane emissions monitoring, reporting, and verification in accordance with OGMP 2.0 standards.
