Bahar Muradova: Urban planning policy should be based on a child rights approach

In the modern era, the concept of “home” has a broader meaning for people than simply a physical living space, Bahar Muradova, Chairperson of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs, said during the roundtable on “Children and Youth” held within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.

She stated that for a child, home means a healthy development environment, access to education and care services, as well as opportunities for play and socialization.

“Today, the world faces complex challenges such as rapid urbanization, climate change, social inequalities and forced displacement.

Unfortunately, one of the groups that feels the impact of these processes most acutely is children.

Children living in informal settlements, vulnerable and conflict-affected environments often face serious difficulties in access to housing, quality education, healthcare services and safe public spaces.

That is why we believe that urban planning and housing policy should be built on a human rights-based approach, especially one based on children’s rights.

Children are not only beneficiaries of social policy. They are key participants whose views and needs should be taken into account in shaping the future of cities.

That is why children’s daily life experiences and needs should be systematically integrated into urban planning processes,” she said.
