Malaysia plans to build 1 million affordable homes over next decade, minister says at WUF13

The Malaysian government plans to build 1 million affordable housing units over the next 10 years, Malaysia’s Minister of Housing and Local Government and President of the Assembly of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Nga Kor Ming, said during the ministers’ meeting on the New Urban Agenda organized within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku, APA-Economics reports.

According to him, more than 75% of the country’s population lives in cities, and these cities are the main driving force of the economy.

At the same time, rapid urbanization creates challenges such as housing affordability, climate risks, and social inequality.

The minister noted that within the framework of Malaysia’s 13th development plan, the country aims to build 1 million affordable and inclusive housing units over the next decade.

Nga Kor Ming emphasized that the country is not only constructing new buildings, but also building smarter and greener cities.

According to him, the “Smart City Framework” is designed to reduce the gap between urban and rural areas through digital technologies, while the “Low Carbon City Framework” serves to adapt to climate change.

“The New Urban Agenda is a promise we make to future generations. Malaysia is committed to fulfilling this promise,” he added.
