Drones strike Kostroma Power Station, one of Russia's largest energy facilities-VIDEO

Explosions were heard in the town of Volgorechensk in Russia's Kostroma Oblast overnight following a drone strike on the Kostroma Power Station, the third largest thermal power station in Russia, APA reports, citing yahoo.com.

According to the independent Russian outlet, drones attacked the Kostroma Power Station on the night of 5-6 November. Residents of Volgorechensk reported several powerful explosions and a fiery glow above the plant. Photos and videos posted on social media confirm strikes near the facility.

Kostroma Oblast Governor Sergei Sitnikov claimed that Russian air defence forces "repelled a drone attack". He added that the explosions had caused "damage to energy infrastructure facilities", but said that electricity supply in the oblast "was not disrupted".

The Kostroma Power Station is located on the right bank of the Volga River in the town of Volgorechensk, about 350 kilometres from Moscow. Its total installed capacity is around 3,600 MW, making it one of the key plants in Russia's energy system.

The facility consists of several power units ranging from 300 to 1,200 megawatts and its chimney, over 320 metres tall, is among the highest in Europe.
