Azerbaijani Minister: SOCAR plans to expand its activities in Middle East

SOCAR's activities in Syria and the region are planned to be expanded in the future, Azerbaijani Economy Minister Mikayil Jabbarov told journalists at the opening ceremony of the Türkiye-Syria natural gas pipeline, APA-Economics reports.

He said that the gas exported to Syria is the gas supplied and sold by SOCAR, that is, not the gas sold by consortia.

The minister added that the delivery of Azerbaijani gas to the Middle East region on competitive terms was established by this project:

"With this project, Azerbaijan has demonstrated its ability to supply energy competitively not only in the western direction, but also in the eastern and southern directions. We hope that activities in this direction will continue in the medium and long term."

It should be noted that the opening ceremony of the Türkiye-Syria natural gas pipeline was held in the Yavuzlu village of the Kilis province of Türkiye. With the commissioning of the pipeline, the export of Azerbaijani gas to Syria via Türkiye has begun.

It should be noted that preparations for the transportation of natural gas under the recently signed document between SOCAR and Syria have been completed. In the first stage, 1.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year is planned to be sent to Syria. The gas will pass through the city of Kilis on the Turkish border and reach the power plants in Aleppo and Homs and will be used for electricity generation. Thanks to this, a production capacity of approximately 1,200–1,300 megawatts is targeted.
