Azerbaijan’s post-conflict reconstruction experience serves as model for future urban planning - EURONEWS REPORT

Azerbaijan’s post-conflict reconstruction experience offers important lessons for future urban planners in terms of urban development, infrastructure expansion, and the creation of smart living spaces from scratch, APA reports.

This was discussed in Euronews’ report titled “What can post-conflict reconstruction teach future city planners?”

The report featured remarks made by President Ilham Aliyev in his interview with Euronews regarding the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13).

President Ilham Aliyev emphasized that Azerbaijan’s large-scale reconstruction program implemented in the liberated territories has already attracted international interest.

President Ilham Aliyev stated that the experience could provide valuable lessons for countries facing similar challenges. According to him, the success of post-conflict reconstruction is measured not only by the renewal of infrastructure, but also by ensuring safe and sustainable living conditions for people.

Azerbaijan has developed a unique model of post-conflict reconstruction through large-scale investments aimed at rebuilding infrastructure, settlements, and smart communities. Within this model, roads, railways, schools, hospitals, energy systems, and utility networks are being reconstructed simultaneously in former conflict zones.

Azerbaijan’s approach includes not only the restoration of destroyed territories, but also the creation of new living spaces based on modern technologies. The implementation of “smart city” and “smart village” concepts is regarded as one of the key directions serving the region’s long-term development.

Sustainable urban planning principles hold a special place in Azerbaijan’s reconstruction strategy. This approach is based on harmonizing modernization with the preservation of historical, cultural, and architectural heritage. The goal is both to create living spaces that meet modern requirements and to preserve the historical identity and cultural values of the regions.

The report also emphasized that the projects being implemented in the liberated territories are at the center of international discussions as one of the successful examples of post-conflict reconstruction in terms of urban planning, sustainable development, and innovative planning.
