EU Mission warns of threat of attacks on ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden

The European Union Naval Mission (Aspides) has warned of the threat of attacks by the Houthis against international maritime transport in the Red Sea and eastern Gulf of Aden.

The warning noted that ships in this region could be targeted again and that companies involved in maritime transportation are advised to take special precautions.

Recall that the previous day, the Iran-backed Houthi group in Yemen resumed missile attacks on Israel. On the evening of March 28, the Houthi group announced that it had launched its second airstrike on Israel since joining the conflict. Houthi spokesman Yahya Sarii said that "several important military facilities" in Israeli territory were hit with missiles and drones.

It should be noted that the Strait of Hormuz is currently effectively closed. The European Union Naval Mission believes that maritime traffic through the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden is now also at risk. The mission has recommended that ships affiliated with Israel and the United States not pass through this region.

The Houthis have previously attacked merchant ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. These waters are considered one of the most important trade routes in the world, located between Northeast Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, and form the main connection between the Mediterranean Sea (via the Suez Canal) and the Indian Ocean (via the Bab al-Mandab Strait).
