Russian fugitive hiding in taiga forest for eight years detained in Karelia

Law enforcement officers in Russia have detained a criminal who had been hiding in the taiga forest for eight years, APA’s Russia bureau reports.

The incident occurred in the Republic of Karelia.

The person, found guilty of abuse of official powers and sentenced to corrective labor, fled from home in October 2018 and had been living in the forest ever since.

He did not use a mobile phone or bank cards, avoided public places, and did not maintain contact with family or friends.

During eight years of isolation, he built several auxiliary structures and collected clothes and food from garbage dumps in nearby settlements, going out only at night.

He was discovered unexpectedly during an operation.
