Report cites systemic violence by French authorities against Kanak population

The National Consultative Commission on Human Rights (La Commission nationale consultative des droits de l’homme) published an official report on January 29, 2026, on the protests that took place in Kanaky (New Caledonia), APA reports.

The document notes that violent actions carried out by French state authorities against the Kanak people were systemic in nature and sharply criticizes the disproportionate and unjustified use of force by law enforcement agencies, stressing that this repressive approach clearly contradicts fundamental human rights and international obligations.

Tartakowsky, co-rapporteur of the opinion on violations of fundamental rights, stated that numerous structural, legal, and operational shortcomings in the functioning of state institutions had been revealed.

The report states that since May 13, 2024, when violence intensified amid protests against the forced change of the electoral body in the archipelago, security forces have carried out repressive measures targeting the Kanak population.

In conclusion, the Commission puts forward a number of recommendations, calling on the relevant authorities to ensure independent and comprehensive investigations into cases of police violence and to improve detention conditions in prisons in line with international human rights standards.
