Media: Trump is ready to provide Kyiv with security guarantees outside of NATO

US President Donald Trump, during online talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders organized by Germany, told them of his readiness to provide Kyiv with security guarantees, but only if they are not linked to NATO, this was reported by the Politico newspaper on August 13, citing sources, APA reports.

"The United States is ready to play some role in securing Kyiv. <...> Trump said he would make such a commitment only if the effort was not part of NATO," the publication said.

Another source said that Trump's openness to such guarantees explains the "cautious optimism" of European leaders on the eve of the meeting of the head of the White House with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

However, as noted, Trump did not specify which guarantees he was talking about, but described only the general concept of what he promised. An unnamed person briefed on the negotiations with European leaders stressed that the United States had "made it clear" that there was no talk of direct arms supplies to Ukraine under any guarantees.

"Trump has made it clear that the United States will not continue to supply weapons or military personnel directly to Ukraine, although they will sell weapons to Europe," the article says.
