Ellen Maduhu: Africa should be granted permanent seats on UN Security Council

Africa must receive permanent seats on the UN Security Council, as well as a more significant voice in the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, Ellen Maduhu, Director of the Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation of Tanzania, said at the Africa Day 2026 conference on the topic: "Rising Continent, Emerging Partnerships" in Baku, Olaylar informs.

According to her, Africachr("39")s global role will be determined not only by the continentchr("39")s natural resources but also by the level of economic integration, industrial cooperation, and institutional unity.

"We must accelerate the development of the African Continental Free Trade Area and abandon trade rules from the colonial era. Africa needs a single market with standardized customs rules so that the continent can act in world trade as a single multi-million market," Maduhu emphasized.

She noted that Africa needs to transition from exporting raw resources to processing them within the continent. In particular, this involves creating facilities for processing lithium, nickel, and cobalt, as well as developing the battery industry.

According to the Tanzanian representative, infrastructure and energy development, including gas, hydro, and solar projects, also remains an important priority.

She emphasized that the countries of the continent intend to build relationships with world powers, including the United States, the European Union, China, and Russia, based primarily on Africachr("39")s national interests and the principles of South-South partnership.
