Azerbaijan and World Bank discuss preparatory work on “Livable Baku” project

The main areas of cooperation within the framework of the “Livable Baku” project, which is currently in the preparation stage between Azerbaijan and the World Bank, as well as issues related to promoting sustainable urban development, environmental resilience, and green infrastructure in the country and the region, were discussed, APA-Economics reports, citing the Ministry of Finance.

Finance Minister Sahil Babayev met today with a delegation of the World Bank’s “Livable Baku” project team visiting Azerbaijan.

Minister Sahil Babayev stated that partnership with the World Bank plays an important role in supporting Azerbaijan’s socio-economic development, deepening institutional reforms, and shaping modern and sustainable infrastructure.

It was noted that the “Livable Baku” project holds strategic importance in terms of improving the ecological environment in Baku, increasing climate resilience, and accelerating the transition to a more sustainable urban development model.

It was reported that the project envisages the modernization of urban infrastructure and public spaces, improvement of solid waste management, restoration of polluted areas, as well as strengthening urban governance systems.

The minister emphasized the importance of implementing the project in phases and on a priority basis, noting that preparatory work is continuing in close coordination with the World Bank, and expressed gratitude for the support provided.

Representatives of the World Bank highly appreciated the urban planning and climate-oriented reforms being implemented in Azerbaijan, noting that the “Livable Baku” project could become an exemplary initiative in terms of modern urban development and ecological transformation.

The meeting also included an exchange of views on cooperation opportunities regarding other infrastructure and socially oriented initiatives being implemented in the country, including regional road infrastructure and employment support programs.

The parties also emphasized the importance of strengthening institutional coordination, increasing the level of technical preparedness, and ensuring long-term sustainability in the next stages of the project.
