Media: Iran eyes a new source of power deep beneath the Strait of Hormuz

Tehran has now turned its attention to undersea internet cables passing through the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, CNN reports.

Iranian officials have announced plans to demand payments from international companies using those cables.

Media outlets close to the Iranian government emphasized the importance of technology giants complying with the country’s laws and stated that special licensing fees could be introduced for cable operators. It is noted that through this move, Iran intends to use its strategic position in the region as a tool of economic and political pressure.

Experts say undersea cables are of vital importance for global internet traffic, banking operations, cloud systems, and military communications. Therefore, any possible interference with this infrastructure could seriously affect digital connectivity worldwide.
