Drilling timeline announced for next phase of Absheron field development

Drilling operations under the Full-Scale Development Project of the Absheron gas-condensate field are planned to begin in the first quarter of next year, said Tahir Jafarov, Project Manager at Greenwich Consulting, during public discussions of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment report for the Full-Scale Development Project of the Absheron field, APA-Economics reports.

According to him, drilling operations within the project will continue until mid-2029.

Tahir Jafarov also noted that procurement, engineering, construction, and commissioning works for the offshore segment of the project are planned to begin in the third quarter of this year and be completed in the third quarter of 2029.

The company representative added that onshore procurement, engineering, construction, and commissioning works under the project will also continue from the third quarter of 2026 to the third quarter of 2029.

It should be noted that first gas production under the Full-Scale Development Project of the Absheron field is planned to begin on September 1, 2029.

The project includes drilling three (plus one future) subsea wells, installation of subsea infrastructure, laying offshore and onshore pipelines, and construction of a Central Processing Facility (CPF) onshore approximately 4 km southwest of the Sangachal Terminal.

The CPF will process raw well fluids and gas for export via the South Caucasus Pipeline (SCP) and the Domestic Gas Network, and will export unstabilized condensate to the Sangachal Terminal.

The Absheron gas-condensate field is located in the Absheron archipelago of the South Caspian oil and gas basin, approximately 85–100 km east of Baku, at a sea depth of around 350–550 meters. According to initial estimates, the field’s hydrocarbon reserves amount to 350 billion cubic meters of gas and 45 million tons of condensate. The field is being developed by JOCAP, a joint operator of SOCAR and TotalEnergies.

On August 4, 2023, the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) joined the Absheron project as a new shareholder. As a result, SOCAR and TotalEnergies each hold 35%, while ADNOC holds a 30% stake.
