Iranian Foreign Ministry: We support peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan

We support a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani at today’s press conference, APA reports.

According to him, Iran supports the ratification of a peace agreement that will pave the way for lasting security and stability in the South Caucasus:

“The signing of the statement by Azerbaijan and Armenia was a sovereign decision of the two countries. As in the past, we support the ratification of a peace agreement between the two countries that will pave the way for lasting security and stability in the South Caucasus.”

Kanaani stressed that the establishment of communication routes between the countries of the region must be carried out without any geopolitical changes:

“Although we agree with and support the creation of communication routes between regional countries, we believe that such routes must be established while preserving internationally recognized borders, respecting the territorial integrity of states, and without any geopolitical changes.”

The Iranian official noted that the presence of foreign forces in the region is not considered beneficial and has raised concern:

“We do not consider the presence of foreign forces useful and have expressed our concern. We have been assured that no military forces will be deployed in the region in any form. One of the key provisions of the peace agreement emphasizes that no third party’s military forces will be stationed along the common borders of the two countries. Therefore, we are concerned about this issue and are closely monitoring developments while maintaining close contact with both countries.”
