Armenia to terminate EU monitoring mission deployed on border with Azerbaijan

Armenia has committed to terminating the EU Mission in Armenia (EUMA) deployed at the border with Azerbaijan, APA reports citing  a diplomatic source.

The draft agreement includes, along with the parties’ commitments not to use force against each other or threaten with the use of force, a provision that prohibits allowing their territories to be used by third states for aggression against the other side holds special significance in the context of current regional realities and the military presence in the area.

Since there is no military presence of any third party in Azerbaijan, amid existence of military presence in Armenia, the inclusion of this commitment in the draft should not be considered accidental. Similarly, the obligation of the parties in Article 7 of the draft agreement not to deploy forces of any third party on the mutual border requires special attention. As is known, this element was one of the issues that remained open until the final stage of the draft agreement, and the Armenian side did not want to agree to this provision for various reasons. This provision currently holds special significance in the context of the EU Mission in Armenia (EUMA) deployed on Armenian territory and includes Armenia’s commitment to terminate the activities of this mission.
