Minister’s adviser: Share of renewable energy in electricity generation planned to reach 24%

“It is planned to increase the share of renewable energy in electricity generation to 24 percent," Adviser to the Minister of Economy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Huseyn Huseynov, said during the session titled “Strategic Environmental Assessment Tool for Achieving Climate Targets in Urban Planning” held within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.

He stressed that digital infrastructure already covers 95 percent of the country:

“The momentum created by COP29 held in Baku in 2021 became a turning point in this field. This event led to the formation of concrete commitments in climate financing, green infrastructure, and sustainable development, and continues to determine the direction of our economy as well as our urban planning priorities. We are integrating sustainability not as an additional element, but as a fundamental principle of long-term economic strategy.”

Huseyn Huseynov stated that today 58 percent of the world’s population lives in cities, and this figure is projected to reach approximately 70 percent by 2050. He noted that cities are responsible for 70 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions and 75 percent of energy consumption: “Between 1970 and 2021, economic losses caused by extreme weather and climate events reached 4.3 trillion US dollars, and this figure continues to grow. Population growth, the expansion of cities, and pressure on infrastructure will intensify further.”
