Deputy minister: Use of plastic packaging in Azerbaijan has increased fivefold

“The increase in plastic waste causes ecosystem degradation,” said Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Vugar Karimov, during the session titled “Combating Plastic Pollution: Promoting Livable Cities and the Circular Economy” held within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.

He stated that the use of plastic containers in Azerbaijan has increased fivefold over the past 15 years.

“More than 430 million plastic containers are produced worldwide every year, but only 10 percent of them are recycled. The production of plastic containers causes serious harm to the atmosphere and contributes to the intensification of climate change. It is important to pay attention to these issues in schools and universities. A relevant agency has been established in the country for waste management. Work is ongoing in Azerbaijan on household waste management plans covering the years 2027–2030. It is important to respond to global challenges and take strategic measures for the future. WUF13 is an important platform to once again draw attention to this issue,” he said.
