Umayra Taghiyeva: Azerbaijan has made serious investments in the modernization of the meteorological system

Today, the world is facing a triple planetary crisis. These are climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, Umayra Taghiyeva, Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, said at the event titled “Early Warnings and Sustainable Cities” held within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, APA reports.

She noted that these problems together threaten ecosystems, people’s well-being, sustainable development, and the resilience of our cities and communities: “Many stories have been told, shared, or we have witnessed how cities are affected by climate change. Azerbaijan has also faced various environmental problems and climate-related threats. Building stronger and more resilient infrastructure in cities against climate change-related risks and disasters is vital for climate resilience, and this is possible through early warning systems.”

Umayra Taghiyeva stated that in accordance with Azerbaijan’s National Adaptation Plan and the Great Return Program, the modernization of the early warning system by 2030 and the establishment of a multi-hazard early warning system in the liberated territories have been identified as important adaptation measures for climate resilience: “The government has made serious investments in the modernization of the national meteorological system. Over the past five years, 73% of the systems have already been automated and equipped with modern technologies. However, this is only the first stage of the early warning system. There are still a number of other targets to be achieved. In order to complete modernization by 2030, modern forecasting, verification systems, local numerical weather forecasting models and sector-specific climate analyses are required.”
