Presidential aide: Uncertainty over a possible US strike on Iran is causing concern in Azerbaijan

Uncertainty surrounding a possible US strike on Iran is causing concern in Azerbaijan, although Baku has not discussed the issue with Washington, said Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, in an interview with The National.

“The situation is unpredictable, and it would be difficult to properly assess all the threats and challenges that may arise as a result,” he said.

Hikmet Hajiyev emphasized that Azerbaijan has not conveyed these concerns to Washington. “We are not discussing this issue with the United States, and they have never contacted us on this matter,” he noted.

According to the presidential aide, Azerbaijani officials have held talks with their Iranian counterparts in recent days.

Hikmet Hajiyev stressed that “the security situation in Iran does not require immediate intervention by the Azerbaijani side, as official Baku has always refrained from interfering in the internal affairs of other countries.”

The presidential aide added that Azerbaijan, an energy-rich country in the South Caucasus, feels as if it is caught “between two world wars” between Iran and Russia.

“On one side, the Russia-Ukraine war continues, and at the same time there is the confrontation between Israel and Iran, along with the involvement of the United States in that confrontation,” he said.
