In accordance with existing agreements between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Iran, measures are being continued to ensure the efficient use of water and energy resources of the “Khudaferin” and “Giz Galasi” reservoirs on the Aras River, said Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan, Shahin Mustafayev during his speech at a meeting dedicated to the State Program for 2026-2035 on improving water supply, wastewater, and stormwater systems in the city of Baku and the Absheron Peninsula, APA reports.
Shahin Mustafayev noted that, in 2024, credit and project agreements were signed with an international financial institution to co-finance the construction project of the main irrigation canal branching from the “Giz Galasi” reservoir, and work has begun on the implementation of the project.
“This project will serve to improve water supply for 252,000 hectares of land in the Mil-Mugan zone and provide water to 12,000 hectares of new land in the territories of the Jabrayil and Fuzuli districts,” he said.
