Today is the birthday of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Ilham Aliyev, APA reports.
The head of state turns 64.
Ilham Heydar oglu Aliyev was born on December 24, 1961, in the city of Baku. He received his secondary education in Baku from 1967 to 1977. In 1977, Ilham Aliyev enrolled at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), successfully completed his higher education, and continued his academic work in the institute’s postgraduate program.
In 1985, Ilham Aliyev defended a thesis, received the degree of Candidate of Historical Sciences, and worked as a lecturer at MGIMO until 1990. From 1994 to 2003, he served as Vice President and later First Vice President of the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR).
Elected as a member of the Milli Majlis in 1995 and 2000, Ilham Aliyev headed the Azerbaijani delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) from 2001 to 2003. As part of his political activity at PACE, he was elected Vice President of the Assembly and a member of its Bureau in January 2003.
In 2003, following his appointment as Prime Minister, Ilham Aliyev’s parliamentary mandate was terminated.
On October 15, 2003, he was elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and began performing his duties on October 31. In the elections held on October 15, 2008, Ilham Aliyev was re-elected President, receiving more than 88 percent of the votes.
He won the presidential election once again on October 9, 2013.
In the presidential election held on April 11, 2018, Ilham Aliyev was re-elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan with 86.03 percent of the vote.
In the snap presidential election held on February 7, 2024, Ilham Aliyev was again elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan with 92.12 percent of the vote.
President Ilham Aliyev is the Chairman of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party.
Ilham Aliyev has also been the President of Azerbaijan’s National Olympic Committee since 1997. For his great services in the development of sports and the Olympic movement, he has been awarded the highest order of the International Olympic Committee.
He is fluent in Azerbaijani, Russian, English, French, and Turkish.
He is married and has three children.
Under the leadership of the victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, the Azerbaijani Army, as a result of the 44-day war starting on September 27, 2020, as well as the local anti-terror operations carried out on September 19–20, 2023, liberated all Azerbaijani territories from Armenian occupation, fully ensuring the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. After 30 years, the tricolor flag is now flying over our liberated lands.
