On July 2, the Azerbaijani Police celebrates the 107th anniversary of its establishment.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) and police agencies played an important role in the formation of the Azerbaijani state, protecting national interests, and were at the forefront of defending independence during the People's Republic in 1918-1920.
After the collapse of the People's Republic on April 27, 1920, during the 70 years that Azerbaijan was part of the Soviet Union, the internal affairs agencies gained great experience in combating crime and maintaining law and order. During the USSR, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Azerbaijan and its affiliated agencies were distinguished by their high professionalism.
During the reign of Great Leader Heydar Aliyev, the activities of the Azerbaijani police were constantly kept in the spotlight. July 2 was declared Azerbaijan Police Day by a Decree signed by the National Leader in 1998.

Azerbaijani Police were always on the frontline in the First Karabakh War. About 1,700 police officers and military personnel were martyred and 1,710 were injured in the First Karabakh War. 67 people were awarded the title of National Hero of Azerbaijan, and 1,143 were awarded orders and medals.
In the fight against crime, while performing their duties of maintaining public order and ensuring public security in the country, 99 police officers and military personnel were killed, and 2,640 were injured.
