Peskov: Detention of Russian journalists in Baku contradicts bilateral relations

"The detention of Russian journalists in Baku does not correspond to generally accepted norms and the spirit of bilateral relations," said Dmitry Peskov, Press Secretary of the Russian President, APA reports.

“The issue concerns journalists specifically. Certainly, such actions against media representatives are completely inconsistent with generally accepted rules and norms, as well as the spirit and nature of Russia-Azerbaijan relations,” the Kremlin spokesman said.

It should be noted that, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ Press Service, although the accreditation of the Baku branch of the “Rossiya Segodnya” Information Agency (“Sputnik Azerbaijan”) was suspended in February 2025, the Ministry initiated investigations following operational information regarding its continued activity based on illegal financing.

During operational-search activities at the Baku branch of “Rossiya Segodnya” Information Agency (“Sputnik Azerbaijan”), the Ministry of Internal Affairs detained seven people. A criminal case was opened under articles on fraud, illegal entrepreneurship, and legalization of criminally obtained property. Two persons were arrested, and five others were held liable.

Investigations in the criminal case are ongoing.
