Moscow explains purpose of import restrictions on certain Armenian products

Russia will be able to replace fruit and vegetable supplies from other markets, including domestic producers, after imposing restrictions on imports from Armenia, APA’s Moscow bureau reports.

Russian Minister of Economic Development Maksim Reshetnikov said the restrictions could create problems for Armenia, but not for the Russian market.

“Yes, it may create problems for Armenia. For the Russian market, these are volumes that can easily be replaced by domestic production and supplies from other markets. There is nothing critical here,” he said.

The Russian minister stressed that the path chosen by the Armenian leadership would sooner or later make it impossible for the republic to remain in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

“The path chosen by our colleagues will, of course, sooner or later lead to the impossibility of remaining in the EAEU,” Reshetnikov said.

He noted that Russia’s restrictions on imports of certain goods from Armenia are aimed at preventing a negative development of events.

The minister emphasized that the restrictions in the agricultural sector are not critical for Russia, but that more sensitive issues would concern gas supplies.
