Ebola crisis in Congo deepens as patients escape isolation ward

Thirteen Ebola patients escaped from an isolation ward following an attack on a hospital in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Radio Okapi reports.

According to the report, the current whereabouts of the infected patients remain unknown.

It was noted that those who attacked the quarantine centers at Ebola treatment facilities were relatives of the patients.

Meanwhile, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described the situation as serious.

The head of the organization stated that 220 suspected deaths from Ebola have currently been recorded, and due to the late detection of cases, response agencies are already “falling behind and trying to catch up with the situation.”

“We are urgently scaling up our operations, but the outbreak is currently outpacing us,” Tedros said.

He added that countries bordering the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the epicenter of the outbreak, must take immediate measures.
