UN-Habitat: The road from WUF13 to WUF14 passes through strengthening local implementation

The discussions held at the WUF13 forum in Baku are also forming the basis for the process leading to WUF14 in the next stage and contributing to the strengthening of practical approaches aimed at transforming global commitments into local results, Maimunah Mohd Sharif, former Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), said during the event titled “Advancing Housing Through Multilateralism: From Global Commitments to Local Impact” held within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.

She stated that the road from WUF13 to WUF14 passes through strengthening local implementation: “Global housing commitments produce real results only when they are transformed into local policy and practical implementation. Cities must first identify their own problems and then study international experience and apply it in accordance with local conditions.”

According to her, global agendas should be coordinated among regional, national and local levels, and communities and the private sector should also be involved in this process: “The success of policies depends on their support through concrete budgets, implementation mechanisms and investment opportunities. Housing policy should create a favorable environment for investors and financial institutions so that more investment can be attracted for the implementation of affordable housing projects.”
