Post-disaster recovery framework presented at WUF13

Millions of people around the world are living amid the destruction of disasters they did not cause, and existing recovery mechanisms no longer respond to global challenges, Kathryn Moore, representative of the International Federation of Landscape Architects, said during one of the events held within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.

She presented a new global initiative titled the “Framework for Transformative Recovery After Disasters.”

It was noted that the new framework is not merely another policy document, but a call to rethink the concept of post-disaster recovery. The document identifies the creation of safe and sustainable settlements, the provision of affordable housing, social equality and the participation of communities in decision-making processes as key priorities.

The document particularly highlights ensuring that women, elderly people, persons with disabilities, residents of informal settlements and internally displaced persons are not excluded from recovery processes as an important priority.

During the speech, it was emphasized that recurring disasters have already become an inseparable part of the global housing crisis. In many countries, the number of destroyed homes exceeds the pace of construction of safe and affordable housing.
