Minister: Uruguay expands housing program for middle-income families

Uruguay is expanding its housing program for middle-income families, Uruguay’s Minister of Housing and Territorial Planning, Tamara Paseyro Marin, said during the session titled “A New Deal for Housing Finance” held within the framework of WUF13, APA-Economics reports.

The minister stated that housing programs in Uruguay are formed on the basis of the state budget, international financial institutions, and private investments.

According to her, the government has combined three main mechanisms within the same program to attract private investments: tax incentives, housing price limits, and subsidies for families.

Tamara Paseyro Marin noted that this model is intended especially for middle- and lower-middle-income families: “These families have the ability to make monthly payments, but they do not have the opportunity to accumulate initial savings.”

The minister emphasized that the main issue in housing policy is not only ensuring that people obtain housing, but also ensuring that they can remain in that housing in the long term.
