Leyla Aliyeva: A major transformation process is underway in Baku, with the goal of making the city more sustainable by 2040

"IDEA has implemented numerous projects, including the planting of millions of trees, educating children, organizing seminars, raising awareness about water waste and air pollution, as well as preparing documentaries and exhibitions," Leyla Aliyeva, founder and head of the IDEA Public Union, said in a message addressed to participants of the conference titled “Bringing the New Urban Agenda to Life: Integrating Air Quality and Green Infrastructure into Sustainable Cities” held within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.

“We are working to improve the urban environment and turn cities into better places for both people and nature. IDEA transforms spaces into greener and more accessible public areas for people of all ages. This encourages people to spend more time outdoors and breathe cleaner air. Green barriers are being installed in residential areas to help create a more sustainable environment,” the message said.

It was emphasized that IDEA actively supports sustainable transportation by promoting bicycle use.

“We also organize coastal cleanup campaigns to collect plastic waste and direct it to recycling. To date, more than 120 tons of waste have been collected and disposed of. Through all these activities, IDEA aims to build a healthier and greener future, while also establishing a strong foundation of environmental responsibility among the younger generation,” the message noted.

It was pointed out that air pollution is the second-largest risk factor causing deaths worldwide:

“This problem leads to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, as well as many other health issues. Every year, around 700,000 children under the age of five lose their lives due to air pollution. Without clean air, a healthy city is impossible. This is also of great importance for the productivity of urban communities, especially among children.

Azerbaijan understands this challenge and is taking steps to make air quality a key part of urban planning policy. A major transformation process is currently underway in Baku. The goal is to make the city more sustainable by 2040. This is planned to be achieved through better public transportation, green spaces, and clean energy. All these initiatives serve the formation of a modern and sustainable urban environment.”
