Georgian official: 40 urban planning projects implemented in post-Soviet period

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, we did not have urban planning resources in Georgia. But today, 40 planning projects have already been implemented by municipalities, Tinatin Kolbaia, First Deputy Head of Georgia’s Spatial and Urban Development Agency, said during the event titled “Two regions, one agenda: lessons for inclusive urban regeneration” organized by UN-HABITAT within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.

She stated that support through priority investment plans is very important in Georgia: “The main thing for us is that the plans create livable cities. Issues related to housing provision are regulated by several institutions. We have a housing provision strategy. Georgia has gone through a very long path regarding reforms. We already have a unified strategy related to informal settlements.”

She pointed out that there are internally displaced persons problems in post-Soviet countries:

“We are a post-Soviet country, and we also have internally displaced persons. After the occupation of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, there were 300,000 internally displaced persons, which created an additional burden for the country. Because we had to accommodate them. This support for them continues today as well.”
