Congolese minister: 83% of households in Kinshasa lack land ownership documents

Kinshasa, the capital with a population of approximately 17 million, is one of the fastest-growing megacities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and globally. More than one million new residents settle in Kinshasa every year, Alexis Gisaro, Minister of Infrastructure and Public Works of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, said during the ministers’ meeting held within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, APA-Economics reports.

He noted that 83% of households in the city do not have land ownership documents:

“The shortage of adequate housing in the country stands at 9 million units.

In response to this situation, the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has declared urbanization a national priority and prepared a 10-year urban planning and housing program covering 2026–2036. The goal is to turn urbanization into a driving force of economic, social, and environmental development.”
