PM Ünal Üstel: Northern Cyprus is a Turkic state and should therefore become a permanent member of the OTS

Interview with Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Ünal Üstel for APA

We see that relations are further strengthening

- My first question is about the economic and political relations between the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Azerbaijan. How do you assess this, and what steps are you taking to further develop these relations?

- After becoming an observer member of the Organization of Turkic States, we are implementing a number of initiatives to strengthen the ties between Azerbaijan and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. First of all, I would like to note that a trilateral protocol has been signed between the New Azerbaijan Party led by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, the Justice and Development Party led by President of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the National Unity Party, which represents us as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. As a result of this protocol, rapprochement was first established between the parties. Then, we are discussing how we can further bring the three peoples closer together. An exchange of views is being conducted on expanding cooperation in youth, sports, economy, and the business sector. We see that as a result of the activities carried out, representatives of both the tourism sector and the business world come together with each passing day, and relations are further strengthening.

And gradually, a number of initiatives have been launched in both tourism and trade. We are confident that good results will be achieved from these efforts, and we will continue these activities with our Azerbaijani brothers.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is a Turkic state, and for this reason, it is necessary for it to move from observer status to full membership in the Organization of Turkic States.

- What are the expectations of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus from the Organization of Turkic States, and what work is being done to develop relations within this organization?

-  We are very pleased to be part of the Organization of Turkic States. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is a Turkic state, and for this reason, it is necessary to move from observer status to full membership within the organization. It should strengthen its relations with the Organization of Turkic States in trade, economy, social, sports, and youth fields. Our people should be able to travel more easily, visit one another, and become familiar with each other’s cultures. For this reason, we attach great importance to the organization’s meetings. This is very important for us.

The mindset of the Greek side is not changing and will not change

- What do you think about the prospects of a two-state solution to the Cyprus issue? Do you think this model is realistic? What initiatives do you have in the dialogue and peace process with Greek Cyprus?

- Our people living in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus gained their freedom after the Cyprus Peace Operation carried out on July 20, 1974, and a 50-year struggle was waged to live in two separate regions. We see that the mindset of the Greek side is not changing and will not change. Therefore, in the process ahead, in consultation with the Republic of Türkiye, we have put forward the principles of a two-state solution since 2020. We believe that if equality and sovereignty are not ensured on the basis of two states, a solution to the Cyprus issue will not be possible. At present, there is peace in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. This is the solution we want.

- What are the participation opportunities and plans of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in joint economic and infrastructure projects with the OTS countries?

- In general, we have a concrete vision within the OTS regarding the development of the New Silk Road. Being part of the New Silk Road project is of strategic importance for us. This issue also holds a special place on the agenda of the Organization of Turkic States, and when President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received us yesterday, he also emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation in this direction. It is necessary to act more quickly and in a coordinated manner for the development of this route.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, as a strategic island located in the Mediterranean, can play an important role in the Silk Road. In this regard, both the Organization of Turkic States, Türkiye, and other partners can effectively utilize this strategic position. This could become an important turning point for the region.

- How can the role of Northern Cyprus be assessed in matters of regional security and stability in the Turkic world?

- After the conflicts in the region, security issues have also gained particular importance. The Turkish Republic is located on strategic trade routes and has significant logistics capabilities through both its airports and seaports. Through these opportunities, relations with both Türkiye and Azerbaijan can be further strengthened. As a result, we would further enhance trade turnover, economic cooperation, and mutual relations in other fields.
