Georgia ombudsman highlights condition of Azerbaijani theater building in Tbilisi

“It is important to preserve and promote the cultures of national minorities in order to achieve their full civic integration,”  APA’s local bureau reports, citing Georgia’s Public Defender Levan Ioseliani’s 2025 report on the state of human rights and freedoms in the country.

The document notes that the number of events aimed at promoting the cultures of national minorities remains low.

“The condition of buildings of cultural significance for national minorities, which have required strengthening and restoration for many years, remains problematic. Among them, unfortunately, it is necessary to mention the Azerbaijani drama theater, whose restoration had not been carried out even in 2025,” the report says.

Note that the Tbilisi State Professional Azerbaijani Drama Theater named after Heydar Aliyev is located at 1 Gorgasali Street in Tbilisi. The building of the cultural center, which is over 150 years old, has been considered dilapidated for years and it is stated that its restoration is impossible. The foundation of a new building for the theater was laid on October 27, 2023, but construction work has not started to date.
