EAEU summit underway in Astana, discussion of Armenia’s EU accession plans expected

A meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council is being held in Astana, APA’s Russia bureau reports.

First, a restricted-format meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council took place.

The meeting was attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan, and Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission Bakytzhan Sagintayev.

Russia is represented at the meeting by Deputy Prime Minister and member of the Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission Alexey Overchuk, as well as Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov.

The heads of state are expected to discuss behind closed doors Armenia’s plans to join the European Union.

The meeting will later continue in an expanded format with the participation of Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Cuban Vice President Salvador Valdes Mesa, and Iranian Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Mohammad Atabak.
