UN deputy chief: Women’s housing rights are often pushed into the background

"Housing is one of the main areas where equality in societies manifests itself in a real way and is directly linked to women’s safety, economic independence, and social well-being," UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said during one of the events held within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.

She noted that safe and affordable housing is not only a shelter for women, but also a place of dignity and the foundation for new opportunities.

Amina Mohammed stressed that a home gives women the opportunity to receive education, work, escape violent relationships, and build their lives independently.

The Deputy Secretary-General stated that the rapidly deepening global housing crisis does not affect everyone equally. According to her, women living in informal settlements, migrants, women with disabilities, representatives of indigenous communities, and women displaced due to conflicts face more serious challenges.

Amina Mohammed added that women’s land and housing rights are often pushed into the background, while their access to financial and credit opportunities is restricted, making women more vulnerable to violence and social instability.

She particularly emphasized the importance of developing inclusive housing policies for women, expanding access to financial and credit opportunities, and strengthening the role of civil society.
