UNEP: Cities generate a large share of plastic waste globally

"Work on combating plastic pollution and preparing a global plastics treaty remains one of the key priorities on the international environmental agenda," said Sharon Gil, Head of UNEP's Subnational Climate Action Unit, during the session titled “Combating Plastic Pollution: Promoting Livable Cities and the Circular Economy,” held within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.

She said that the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is carrying out extensive work to address plastic pollution and has dedicated teams working specifically on this issue.

“Cities generate a large share of the world’s plastic waste, but they also have the ability to drive systemic change through key governance tools such as urban planning, waste infrastructure, and public awareness,” she said.

She added that solutions to combat plastic pollution already exist, and that the circular economy model is considered both an accessible and applicable approach. With existing technologies and the right policy decisions, countries and companies can achieve significant results in this direction.
