More than 1 million people in Europe, including 400,000 children, are homeless, European Commissioner for Housing Dan Jorgensen said in a video address to the session titled “Global Housing Crisis – What’s the Plan?” held within the framework of WUF13, APA-Economics reports.
According to him, the housing problem is not only related to living space, but is also a matter of dignity, social justice and people’s right to live in a safe environment.
Dan Jorgensen stated that the housing crisis undermines social cohesion, limits mobility in the labor market, complicates access to education and delays young people from starting families.
According to the Commissioner, more than 1 million people, including more than 400,000 children, are homeless in the European Union, and this figure is unacceptable.
He noted that for the first time in the history of the European Union, a European Affordable Housing Plan aimed at providing housing for everyone has been prepared.
Within the framework of the plan, it is envisaged to increase the stock of affordable, energy-efficient and high-quality housing, attract investors and implement long-term reforms.
Dan Jorgensen added that a new European Housing Alliance is being created in order to strengthen the exchange of experience among European countries, cities and regions.
“Millions of people around the world are waiting for a solution to the housing problem. We must provide this answer together,” he emphasized.
