UN official: We must approach urban expansion carefully

The New Urban Agenda is about integrating informal settlements into urban plans and developing policies that address their needs, Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Anacláudia Rossbach said during her speech at the official opening press conference held within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.

“I believe that the real answer to the question ‘What kind of cities do we want to see in the future?’ lies in the New Urban Agenda. The New Urban Agenda is a global commitment agreed upon by member states in 2016, exactly 10 years ago, at the Habitat III conference held in Quito. This year, within the framework of the UN General Assembly, member states are reviewing what has happened over the past 10 years and what will happen over the next 10 years. The New Urban Agenda is very clear. This agenda speaks about cities planned for people and for nature. It talks about inclusive cities that leave no one behind. The New Urban Agenda places housing at the very center. It recognizes that land has not only economic value, but also important social and environmental functions. Therefore, we must approach urban expansion carefully.

The New Urban Agenda speaks about compact cities, balanced density and public spaces. It also speaks about cities planned by women, together with women and for women,” Rossbach said.
