Georgian MIA: Afgan Sadigov was deported to Azerbaijan-UPDATED

The Tbilisi City Court found Afgan Sadigov guilty of committing a violation of the law stipulated by Article 173 of the Code of Administrative Offenses.

According to APA 's Georgia bureau, the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs released information about this.

The report noted that Sadigov was fined 2,000 GEL for insulting a police officer on a social network, and a decision was made to deport him from Georgia and impose a 3-year ban on entry into the country.

The court took into account the position of representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as well as the fact that Sadigov committed various administrative violations 62 times.

"These include violations of assembly and rally rules, and for this reason he has already served two administrative arrest sentences," the report said.

The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs noted that when making the decision, information provided by Azerbaijani law enforcement agencies regarding security concerns regarding Afgan Sadigov was also taken into account.

"The Republic of Azerbaijan has requested the extradition of Afgan Sadigov, who has been wanted in a criminal case in recent years. However, by the decision of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, a temporary measure was imposed on Georgia and Sadigov's extradition to Azerbaijan was prohibited. Therefore, the Georgian side refused his extradition. A few days ago, the Georgian side received information through official sources that the Azerbaijani Prosecutor's Office, using its authority, had suspended the prosecution in that criminal case. Accordingly, all extradition procedures in Georgia were also suspended.

"At the same time, Sadigov committed an administrative offense, which, in addition to a fine, entails expulsion from Georgia and a ban on entry into the country. For this reason, he was deported to his country of origin and banned from entering Georgia for 3 years," the statement said.

A court in Tbilisi has fined and deported Azerbaijani activist Afgan Sadiqov after finding him guilty of insulting a police officer on social media.

The Tbilisi City Court ruled that Sadiqov had committed an administrative offence under Article 173 of Georgia’s code of administrative violations, which covers insults directed at law enforcement officials.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, the court imposed a fine of 2,000 lari. It also ordered his deportation from Georgia and banned him from re-entering the country for three years.

Sadiqov had been detained by police late the previous night in Tbilisi. Authorities said proceedings were initiated after he allegedly insulted a police officer via social media.

Officials noted that Sadiqov had previously faced administrative penalties multiple times, including for violations related to protest regulations. Georgian authorities said he had been held administratively liable on dozens of occasions and had served two prior terms of administrative detention.

Earlier, his lawyer, Tamta Mikeladze, said the court was considering deportation to Azerbaijan.

The ruling concludes the case, with deportation and entry restrictions now in force.
