Nearly 300 inmates released as Azerbaijan implements amnesty

The implementation of the Amnesty Act is underway at the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry told APA.

The execution of the decision of the Milli Majlis on declaring an amnesty on the initiative of President Ilham Aliyev on the occasion of the “Year of Constitution and Sovereignty” is continuing.

The implementation of the Amnesty Act in the penitentiary institutions of the Ministry of Justice was carried out with the participation of the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Ministry of Justice, the Public Council under the Ministry, Ombudsman Sabina Aliyeva, Member of Parliament Zahid Oruj, and media representatives.

At the penitentiary institutions of the Ministry of Justice, documents are being presented to nearly 300 inmates covered by the amnesty, and their release is being carried out.

The implementation of the Amnesty Act has also begun with regard to persons under probation supervision—those sentenced to restriction of liberty, community service, corrective labor, fines, as well as individuals given suspended sentences, conditionally released early from punishment, or whose sentence execution has been deferred. At the Probation Service of the Ministry of Justice, with the participation of relevant state bodies, the Public Council under the Ministry, and media representatives, individuals under probation supervision are being released from penalties not involving deprivation of liberty.

The inmates and their family members expressed their gratitude to President Ilham Aliyev and pledged to strictly comply with the law in the future and contribute to the development of society.

Currently, the relevant structural units of the Ministry of Justice are fully mobilized and are ensuring the prompt and lawful implementation of the Amnesty Act in accordance with legislative requirements.
