Azerbaijani brothers sentenced for 2024 Moscow motorcyclist murder

The criminal trial of Azerbaijani brothers Shahin and Shohrat Abbasov, accused of killing motorcyclist Kirill Kovalev, has concluded in Moscow, APA's Russian bureau reports.

The court sentenced Shahin Abbasov to 17 years in prison and Shohrat Abbasov to 12 years. They will serve their sentences in a high-security correctional facility.

Six people appeared in court in connection with the known criminal case. In addition to the Abbasov brothers, who were accused of the murder, their relatives, their father, Nizami Abbasov, who helped them escape, were found not guilty and released. Their uncle, Bakhtiyar Abbasov, was sentenced to one year in prison, but was released because he was in pre-trial detention.

A family friend, Nahid Huseynov, was also released. His relative, Isakhan Abbasov, received a six-year prison sentence and was fined three million rubles.

During the trial, the prosecution demanded 17 and 14 years in prison for the brothers Shahin and Shohrat, 16 years for Isakhan Abbasov, and 9.5 years for the others. Kovalev's parents' claim for 100 million rubles in compensation was partially satisfied.

Note that in April 2024, a dispute arose between Kirill Kovalev and 21-year-old Shahin Abbasov after the latter allegedly parked his car illegally near the building where Kovalev lived. As a result, Kovalev was stabbed in the chest and abdomen. Shahin and his brother then fled the scene. The motorcyclist later died in the hospital.
