Sweet figs draw crowds to vibrant celebration of taste and traditions [PHOTOS]

Rich in fiber, antioxidants, and essential minerals, figs offer numerous health benefits, from supporting digestion and heart health to improving bone strength and immunity.

In Azerbaijani cuisine, figs are cherished in both fresh and dried forms, often transformed into homemade jams (murabba) served alongside black tea as part of traditional hospitality.

The fig's naturally sweet flavor makes it a perfect ingredient in desserts, sauces, and even savory dishes.

Fig cultivation thrives in several parts of Azerbaijan, particularly in Absheron Peninsula and Lankaran, where the fruit is celebrated for its quality and taste.

Whether enjoyed straight from the tree or preserved in syrup, figs hold a special place in Azerbaijani kitchens and culture.

Visitors to the festival in Gala State Historical-Ethnographic Reserve had the opportunity to taste these delicious figs and fig-based delicacies, experiencing firsthand the rich culinary tradition surrounding this unique fruit, Azernews reports.

The Fig Festival was organized by the Icherisheher State Historical-Architectural Reserve Administration in partnership with the Agriculture Ministry's Agricultural Innovation Center and the EcoSfera Ecological Social Center Public Union.

The festival aimed to highlight the natural wealth of the Absheron region and celebrate the fig-growing heritage of the Gala area. The event attracted local residents, farmers, tourists, and media representatives.

Festival attendees had the chance to explore the culinary, natural, social, and cultural importance of figs. Live cooking demonstrations led by local chefs featured a variety of fig-based dishes, with tastings offered to guests.

As part of the "Chef Arena" segment, professional chefs from restaurants in Icherisheher, including "Shakh Garden," "Qəbələ," "La Quzu," "Pendir Çörək," and "Çay bağı 145" demonstrated fig-themed recipes and shared practical kitchen tips, offering a hands-on experience for both seasoned chefs and food lovers.

A dedicated panel on women's health was also held, bringing together traditional healing practices and modern medical insights.

Attendees had the opportunity to engage with experts and discuss a range of health topics.

For children, a special program called "Grandma's Tales" introduced them to ancient Absheron folklore through storytelling sessions, helping young visitors connect with the region's cultural heritage.

Festival highlights also included the "Tree of Wisdom" and a peaceful meditation corner, both popular attractions for attendees.

Several agricultural research institutes, including those focused on fruit and tea growing, viticulture and winemaking, crop production, veterinary science, animal husbandry, and plant protection, presented their latest work and innovations.

Participants received insights into modern techniques in sustainable farming, winemaking technologies, veterinary services, and plant health solutions.

Nurseries and plant protection companies also took part, displaying their products and services.

The Agricultural Services Agency was present as well, offering information on a wide range of support services for farmers, including seed production, plant health, soil and water testing, laboratory diagnostics, and phytosanitary and veterinary assistance.

The festival concluded with the planting of fig saplings on the grounds of the Gala Reserve.

Guests were then invited to enjoy a large communal feast featuring a variety of delicious dishes made from figs, bringing the event to a flavorful close.
