Growing opportunities in transit transportation: ADY strengthens cooperation with Chinese companies

A delegation from “Azerbaijan Railways” CJSC (ADY) is on a working visit to China.

On July 7, within the framework of the visit, ADY representatives held meetings with Chinese transport and logistics companies.

During meetings with Fang Feng, Vice President of China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC), and Wang Qiaolin, Chairman of CRRC’s Zhuzhou Locomotive Company, ADY Chairman Rovshan Rustamov emphasized the importance of renewing and expanding the locomotive fleet to ensure reliable and secure freight transport, given Azerbaijan’s growing role in the international transport and logistics chain. He also stressed the significance of deepening cooperation with CRRC in this area.

Discussions also covered details of the agreement signed in April of this year for the purchase of seven new locomotives from China, as well as training courses and technical workshops for ADY specialists, technical solutions, production capabilities, and experience exchange.

As part of the visit, a meeting was held with Wang Gui Chao, Head of Lianyungang Port, where it was emphasized that ADY’s cooperation with this port plays a significant role in developing transport connectivity between East and West, particularly within the framework of the Middle Corridor.

It was noted that there is a growing trend in cargo transportation between China and Azerbaijan. In 2024, 287 block trains have been received from China, and within the first six months of this year alone, 199 block trains have already arrived. By the end of the year, the number is expected to exceed 400.

In this context, the establishment of a regular railway service along the Lianyungang–Baku route was highlighted as one of the priority areas.

It was noted that the Baku International Sea Port has recently been officially integrated into the structure of Azerbaijan Railways (ADY). This move enables more efficient coordination of port-railway operations and allows for the provision of comprehensive and optimized logistics services to international partners.

The Baku Port plays a vital role in ensuring cargo flow between Asia and Europe. Currently, the port's annual cargo handling capacity stands at 15 million tons, including 150,000 TEU containers. In the future, it is planned to increase the total capacity to 25 million tons per year, including 500,000 TEU containers.
