Sergey Markov condemns Yekaterinburg events: It is a horror that civilians who did not resist died during detention

The death of two people during the detention of civilians who did not resist is a horror, said director of the Russian Institute of Political Studies, a well-known political scientist, Sergey Markov, while expressing his attitude towards the mass arrest of Azerbaijanis by law enforcement agencies in Yekaterinburg and violence against our compatriots, APA's Moscow correspondent reports.

He said that the anger of the Azerbaijani side is logical.

"The death of two people and the fact that three people are in intensive care during the detention of civilians who did not resist is a horror. This should not be the case. The anger is also logical. We are waiting for a thorough investigation, official explanations and punishment of the guilty," the Russian political expert emphasized.

It should be noted that on the morning of June 27, an operation was carried out in more than 10 apartments where Azerbaijanis live in Yekaterinburg. Most members of the Safarov family, originally from Agdam, were arrested. During the operation, two brothers - Ziyeddin and Huseyn Safarov - were killed, and many Azerbaijanis were detained. Several people were hospitalized.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry issued a statement regarding the incident, demanding clarification from Russia. In addition, on June 28, the Chargé d'Affaires of the Russian Embassy in Azerbaijan, Pyotr Volokovykh, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Russian side was strongly protested against the raids carried out by Russian security forces on June 27, 2025, in the apartments where our compatriots lived, in which two Azerbaijanis were brutally killed, several people were seriously injured, and nine people were arrested.
